A Kiss for Eloquence: Take a pre-wedding trip to Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle, Cork

Author: Michelle Mahoney

For those drawn to Ireland’s rich folklore, a visit to the historic Blarney Castle to “kiss the Blarney Stone” is an experience not to be missed. The journey begins with a climb up the castle’s 120-step spiral staircase, winding through ancient stone walls until you reach the battlements where the legendary stone awaits. To kiss it, you lean back over the edge, placing your lips on the stone. Tradition holds that with this act you will be granted eloquence (what the locals call the “gift of the gab”), blessing you with clarity, confidence and an ease with words.

The Legend Lives On

The story of the Blarney Stone is layered with mystery. Some say it dates back to the Crusades, while others suggest it is a gift from the Queen of the Fairies in south Munster. Whatever its origins, its reputation endures, drawing romantics, storytellers, and sightseers from around the world.

Although partially in ruins, the castle itself is iconic. Built by the powerful chieftain Cormac MacCarthy, its thick stone walls hold centuries of history and secrets. Visitors can explore a dungeon, a grand banqueting hall and a chapel, each offering a glimpse into medieval life.

Guests can also wander through the enchanting Blarney Gardens, where beautifully designed pathways lead to botanical gems. Among them, you’ll find an intriguing Poison Garden, a serene Vietnamese Woodland and The Seven Sisters – a collection of ancient standing stones. A visit to The Great Trees area reveals some of the biggest specimens of their kind in Ireland. Every turn will take you to another delightful surprise.

Kiss the Stone Before You Say “I Do”

Hundreds of thousands visit Blarney Castle to experience the magic each year, and for couples preparing to exchange vows, the ritual is especially fitting. If you are hoping your wedding ceremony will have you speaking eloquently from the heart, a touch of Irish enchantment might be just what you need! blarneycastle.ie/blarney-stone
