Discover California – Endless adventures await
From sun-soaked coastlines to innovation-fueled cities, California is reinventing travel for 2026 and there’s no better time to explore its magic.

On a chilly day in Ontario, California dreaming is a wonderful escape. One doesn’t have to work hard to evoke images of the Golden State – the glitz and glam of Hollywood, palm trees, the tech hub of Silicon Valley are all top of mind. But California is much more than celebrity culture, it’s a state of endless adventure, where vibrant cities, stunning coastlines and natural wonders come together to create unforgettable experiences. From golden beaches to rugged mountains, world-class dining to innovative attractions, there’s something for every traveler.
To help with your new year’s destination planning, HORIZON’s travel team shines a spotlight on four standout destinations – Anaheim, Oakland, Monterey, and the San Francisco Peninsula – each offering its own flavour of California magic. Whether you’re seeking family fun, outdoor adventure or culinary indulgence, these regions promise to make 2026 your most memorable travel year yet.
ANAHEIM: California’s Golden Decade Begins
Why 2026 Is the Year to Visit California’s Most Exciting Destination
Anaheim is gearing up for its biggest transformation yet, and in 2026 it could be California’s most dynamic city. “Just two projects – OC Vibe and Disneyland Forward – represent roughly $10 billion in investment,” says Mike Waterman, President & CEO of Visit Anaheim. “We’re entering what I call ‘the golden decade’.”
At the heart of this evolution is OC Vibe, a new entertainment district from the Samueli family, owners of the Anaheim Ducks. Four times larger than L.A. Live, it will feature concert venues, boutique hotels, lush parks and exceptional dining, all within walking distance of the Honda Center. “It’s the adult-forward experience Anaheim was missing,” Waterman explains. Then comes Disneyland Forward, the park’s largest expansion in decades, adding up to 12 new attractions and reimagining the resort for a new generation of dreamers.
Anaheim’s growth extends beyond attractions. The city’s new East-West Connector will link entertainment and transportation hubs before the 2028 Olympics, when the Honda Center hosts volleyball and OC Vibe becomes a hub for concerts and watch parties.
For Canadians, Anaheim remains sunny, safe, and accessible. “We normally welcome about half a million Canadians a year,” says Waterman. “We know travellers are ready to come back – and Anaheim is ready for them.”
OAKLAND: The Bold, Authentic Heartbeat of the Bay
Where creativity, culture, and courage converge.
Across the bay from San Francisco lies Oakland, a city defined by creativity, culture and independence. For Peter Gamez, President & CEO of Visit Oakland, success came from embracing authenticity. He notes, “Rather than being the city next to San Francisco, we needed to recreate our identity – and travelers have noticed.”
Today, Oakland is celebrated as one of America’s top food destinations, home to MICHELIN-recognized and James Beard–honoured chefs. Many young culinary talents launch here, drawn by affordability and an audience that values creativity over convention. “They want to be close enough to San Francisco’s diners,” Gamez says, “but grounded in the gritty, entrepreneurial vibe that makes Oakland real.”
Beyond its dining scene, Oakland’s music, art and progressive spirit define its energy. It’s where movements began and ideas flourished – from the Black Panther roots to today’s thriving creative culture. “We don’t lead with politics,” Gamez says, “but once you’re here, you see where social progress took root.” Oakland also leans into innovation, pioneering cannabis tourism and launching unique experiences like a vegan food trail. “If it’s real to who we are, we lean in,” Gamez says proudly.
Just minutes by ferry or subway from downtown San Francisco, Oakland offers easy access, an affordable airport and a vibrant personality all its own. As Gamez shares, “Oakland is where people end up at night, where they have fun, where they find something unexpected.”
MONTEREY: California’s Coastal Soul
Where the ocean meets indulgence, and sustainability meets style.
From Big Sur’s cliffs to Pebble Beach’s greens, Monterey County invites travelers to rediscover California’s iconic coastline — reimagined for the modern explorer.
“Monterey is like Nike, a brand within a brand,” says Rob O’Keefe, President & CEO of Visit Monterey County. “Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Carmel and the Salinas Valley each have their own allure. You can be 25 minutes from everything you want: ocean, mountains and wine country all in one place.”
One of the county’s biggest stories is the reopening of Highway 1, expected in March 2026. Often called “California’s Eiffel Tower,” this legendary route reconnects travelers to the full coastal drive. Monterey also shines during Car Week in August, from the elegance of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to the playful Concours d’Lemons – a global celebration of automotive art and humour.
Luxury travelers can indulge at Post Ranch Inn or Carmel Valley Ranch, while boutique hotels and new openings like the Kimpton ensure something for every budget. But what truly defines Monterey is its commitment to sustainability. “If people aren’t prepared to travel responsibly,” O’Keefe says with a smile, “we’d rather they go somewhere else.”
For Canadians, Monterey is an easy, unforgettable escape. With direct access from Toronto and shoulder seasons that shine (September through November and April through May), now is the perfect time to rediscover California’s coastal soul.
SAN FRANCISCO PENINSULA: Adventure, Cuisine & Culture Just Minutes Away
Just south of San Francisco and north of San Jose, the San Francisco Peninsula is redefining itself as a must-visit destination for families, foodies and outdoor enthusiasts. Nature lovers can hike trails overlooking the Bay, cycle along scenic paths, kayak the Pacific or try sport fishing – all just minutes from hotels ranging from boutique inns to full-service resorts.
The Peninsula’s location makes it a perfect base for exploring California’s best, from a day trip to San Francisco or Yosemite to nearby towns like Palo Alto and Los Gatos. Its mild climate and four distinct seasons make travel possible year-round.
Culinary excellence shines here, with 25 MICHELIN-rated restaurants sourcing ingredients from 50 local farms. Wine tastings, craft beverages and farm-to-table events highlight the region’s As Fresh as It Gets ethos, celebrating local seafood and artisanal products.
Canadian travelers will find the Peninsula welcoming and accessible. The region’s mix of diversity, innovation and natural beauty creates a destination that’s as dynamic as it is relaxing.
