The perfect girls’ weekend at Halifax’s new Muir Hotel

By Sarah Milligan

Arriving in the Maritimes always feels like taking a deep breath of fresh air. Having attended university in this part of Canada, visiting the east coast signifies a return home for me. I lived in a big, old, yellow house with five roommates when I was a student there – we shared meals, secrets, chores and laughter. We were lucky – and remain so – as we have prioritized staying in touch; these days via an active group text chat and a biennial summit when we come together to truly enjoy each other’s company.

While young at heart, we are now on the doorstep of milestone birthdays. This trip to Halifax was special, as we surprised two friends with birthdays in the same week. In planning our escape, we knew that above all, we wanted to prioritize quality time together. So, our accommodation needed to feel like an upscale getaway but also comfortable and cozy. We were so lucky to have booked our stay at Halifax’s newest hotel – Muir, Halifax – the truly perfect backdrop for a girls’ weekend.

Muir is elegant and modern without scrimping on the down east charm. The rooms are filled with beautiful original pieces of art by Nova Scotia artists, Maritime products (think Covered Bridge Potato Chips, Peace by Chocolate treats and local wines in the room) and include beautiful made-in-Canada lighting and furniture and high-end products. The hotel was also filled with surprises – a gorgeous state of the art gym and spa (including sauna, steam room, cold plunge and salt bath), a private art gallery on the second floor featuring exhibitions of local art, a free-of-charge luxe car service for local trips, and perhaps our favourite feature of the weekend – BKS – the guests-only speakeasy bar with inventive cocktails and amazing night views of the water.

The best part about Muir is its location. Over the course of our 48-hour trip, we explored the Queens Marque district – popping into boutiques, enjoying a delicious Lebanese brunch at Darya (try the mimosa tree!) and enjoying a relaxing afternoon at the Interlude Spa. Halifax is really at your fingertips while staying at Muir and I especially loved the water view from our room – reminding me that while the hotel had big-city touches, we were truly in Canada’s ocean playground.

Like any great girls’ weekend goes, the best part of the trip was the quality time we got to spend together and Muir provided the perfect setting. We loved ordering our lobster rolls from the room service menu, drinking our morning Nespresso together in plush bathrobes and catching up while sharing a mirror getting ready to go out at night. Often, it’s the little things that come together to make a weekend like this perfect – and Muir really has all of those details covered.
