Small Town Spotlight – Manotick Village, Ontario

Manotick Village, Ontario
By Lorie Steiner
Just 25 km south of the Parliament buildings in downtown Ottawa, a quaint little riverside mill town awaits your visit. Proud of its heritage dating back to the mid-1800s, today Manotick Village presents a four-season scenic feast for your eyes and tasty temptations for every palate.
Named after the Ojibway word for “island in the river” by the village founder, Moss Kent Dickinson, Manotick invites you to experience a little bit of country a short drive from the city. Nestled along the beautiful Rideau River, Manotick is perfectly situated for boating, kayaking and canoeing.
If you’re a history buff, you can take a guided tour of Manotick’s built heritage. From the iconic Watson’s Mill to hidden architectural treasures, you’ll discover the stories behind the buildings that shaped this interesting village and learn why Manotick is known as a living piece of history.
A highlight of ‘old’ Manotick, Watson’s Mill stands riverside as a proud testament to the past, inviting photo ops and leisurely walks along the trails. If you’re a cyclist, you’ll love the picturesque route along the Rideau River Heritage Trail, being at one with nature.
This far-from-sleepy village boasts a walkable traditional Main Street with one-of-a-kind shops, unique restaurants, pubs and cafés (692 Coffee & Bar is my fave!). Side streets throughout Manotick are also alive with thriving small businesses in lovely old homes. A must-visit: The Gingerbread Man is famous in the Nation’s Capital Region for their ultra indulgent themed gingerbread houses and sweet frosted treats.
The perfect destination for day tripping when you’re staying in Ottawa, a few hours spent in Manotick Village will have you relaxed and smiling and ready to come back for more! manotickvillage.com
