It’s Maple Syrup Season at Westfield Heritage Village!
Take the Family on a Maple Themed Adventure in Rockton, Ontario
By Michelle Mahoney
When it comes to food and flavour, maple syrup is high on the list of Canadian favourites. This cultural treasure has a story that stretches back centuries, beginning with the Indigenous peoples who first harvested and used maple sap.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about how this beloved treat is made, spring is the perfect time to see the process in action. At the height of Ontario’s maple syrup season, Westfield Heritage Village opens its gates, inviting visitors to step into the past while celebrating the history and traditions behind this sweet staple.
From Sap to Syrup
The adventure begins at the entry gates, where little ones and grown-ups alike can measure how many “pancakes tall” they are. It’s a fun way to kick off the day and makes for a great photo to remember the visit. From there, guests are free to wander the village at their own pace.
One highlight is the Maple Trivia Trail, a scenic walk that winds through the sugar bush. Along the way, you can watch sap trickle from taps into metal collection buckets and learn interesting facts about how maple syrup is made. The path leads to the Sugar Shack, where sap is slowly boiled down into what is often described as “liquid gold.” Best of all, there are samples to enjoy, giving you a true taste of the experience.

A Glimpse of the Past
A trip to Westfield would not be complete without exploring the historic village. Staffed by friendly volunteers dressed in period costumes, these buildings bring the region’s early history alive. Questions are encouraged, and interpreters are always excited to share their knowledge and stories. Touring the shops, homes and other heritage buildings feels like stepping back into a simpler time – although not necessarily an easier one, as you will see from the demonstrations, which show how much hard work daily life once required.
For a different perspective, hop aboard a tractor-pulled wagon for a cozy ride around the grounds. It is a relaxing way to take in the village, and a rest for tired legs. Just remember, when preparing for the day it’s important to dress for the weather, since you’ll spend most of your visit outdoors.
A Delicious Feast
Nothing goes better with maple syrup than pancakes. After working up an appetite, head to Ironwood Hall for a classic pancake feast, served up by the St. George Lions Club. Before you leave, stop by the gift shop to stock up on some maple-themed treats and nostalgic souvenirs. With so much to see and do, a maple syrup adventure at Westfield Heritage Village is destined to become an annual family tradition.
