ONE ISLAND. ENDLESS WAYS TO SAY, “I DO.”

St. Martin turns a destination wedding into something much bigger than a single day

There is a moment, usually just before sunset, when St. Martin seems to change pace. The light softens, the Caribbean turns gold, dinner tables begin to glow under strings of lights, and somewhere on the island a couple is about to begin one of the most important celebrations of their lives. But what makes St. Martin special for a destination wedding is not simply the view. It is the freedom to create a celebration that feels entirely your own.

On an island shared by French and Dutch cultures, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and shaped by influences from Europe, the Americas and the West Indies, weddings rarely need to fit into a single definition. They can be barefoot or black tie. Intimate or extravagant. French-inspired, Caribbean spirited, deeply traditional, wonderfully unconventional – and sometimes all of these at once.

For nearly two decades, Fée des Caraïbes has been creating destination weddings in St. Martin, accompanying couples from around the world. Through As You Wish Destinations, its North American department, the team also works closely with couples from Canada and the US. asyouwishsxm.com

After more than 400 celebrations on the island, one thing remains clear: St. Martin’s greatest strength is not one particular beach, venue or wedding style – it is the extraordinary variety of experiences that can be created within one destination.

ONE ISLAND, MANY SETTINGS

St. Martin may be small, but that is part of its magic. A wedding weekend can move effortlessly from a welcome dinner on the beach to a ceremony overlooking the sea, a candlelit reception in a private villa, brunch in Grand Case and a day on the water with friends and family.

The island’s beaches each have their own personality. Private villas offer couples the freedom to transform a space into something completely personal. Resorts make it possible for guests to stay together and experience the celebration as a group. Restaurants bring another essential part of St. Martin to the table: food.

And distances remain short enough for one celebration to have several chapters without asking guests to spend their weekend travelling from one place to another. That versatility is something we have seen again and again. Over more than 400 weddings, no two celebrations have looked quite the same.

WHEN TWO CULTURES MEET IN THE CARIBBEAN

St. Martin’s multicultural identity makes it particularly well suited to couples bringing together different cultures, traditions and families. The island itself has been shaped by a remarkable mix of Caribbean, French, Dutch and international influences. For a destination wedding, that diversity creates an environment where different traditions can coexist naturally — without every element of the celebration having to look or feel the same.

Madison and Rezwan’s wedding is one example. The couple celebrated both Bengali and Western traditions, giving each its own distinct setting and atmosphere while bringing their families together for a multi-day celebration across the island. Their connection to St. Martin made that choice especially meaningful: they first met on the island while attending medical school.

“When bringing two families with their own unique cultures together, we felt each aspect of that deserved to be celebrated.”
— Madison

The format also allowed their guests to experience more than the wedding itself. Different events introduced family and friends to different sides of St. Martin — something that can be difficult to achieve during a traditional single-day celebration.

“By having several events, we were able to show our guests multiple parts of the island and why it was so special to us.”
— Madison

For multicultural and international couples, this flexibility may be one of St. Martin’s greatest strengths: the destination does not impose one wedding style. It provides the setting for couples to create their own.

MORE THAN A WEDDING DAY

The destination wedding has changed. Increasingly, couples are not travelling to the Caribbean simply to hold a ceremony somewhere beautiful. They want to create an experience for the people who have travelled to celebrate with them. A wedding becomes a three- or four-day story.

Guests might meet for cocktails with their feet in the sand on the first evening. The following day might be spent exploring the island, swimming or having lunch overlooking the water. Then comes the wedding itself, followed by a relaxed brunch or a boat day before everyone returns home.

For couples, this changes the rhythm completely. Instead of trying to speak to every guest during a five-hour reception, they have time. Time for their families to meet. Time for friends from different parts of their lives to connect. Time to enjoy the destination they have chosen. And for guests, the experience becomes part wedding, part Caribbean escape.

This is perhaps where St. Martin has one of its greatest advantages: there is enough diversity to fill several days without losing the intimacy of being on one island.

FROM PRIVATE VILLA TO TOES IN THE SAND

There is no single St. Martin wedding aesthetic.

A private villa can become an entirely bespoke wedding venue – ceremony at sunset, cocktails around the pool, dinner under the stars and dancing late into the evening. For another couple, luxury means something completely different: a ceremony with only their closest family, the sea behind them and dinner at one beautiful table. Others want a resort experience where their guests can stay together and move easily between beach, ceremony, cocktails and reception.

And sometimes the most memorable details are the simplest ones: local flavours on the menu, the sound of a steel pan during cocktail hour, tropical flowers, candlelight moving in the breeze, or the moment everyone takes off their shoes and walks onto the sand.

The destination provides the setting. The wedding should still tell the couple’s story.

“We never begin with a formula. We begin with the couple — who they are, who they are bringing with them, and how they want their guests to feel. St. Martin gives us an extraordinary number of ways to answer those questions.”
— Chantal Vernusse, Founder, Fée des Caraïbes

THE FRENCH TOUCH, CARIBBEAN SOUL

Food deserves its own place in a St. Martin wedding story.

Grand Case has long been associated with the island’s culinary identity, but the experience extends far beyond a wedding dinner. A destination celebration can include a French-Caribbean welcome dinner, cocktails at a beach club, local cuisine, fine dining and a relaxed brunch by the sea – all during the same weekend. That mixture reflects St. Martin itself.

There is a distinctly French sensibility on one side of the island, Caribbean warmth everywhere, and an international ease that makes visitors feel comfortable very quickly. For a wedding, those influences create opportunities to design an experience that feels sophisticated without becoming formal and tropical without becoming predictable.

WHY ST. MARTIN FOR CANADIAN COUPLES?

For couples travelling from the Greater Toronto Area, getting everyone to the destination matters almost as much as choosing the destination itself. Toronto–St. Maarten air service gives Canadian travellers access to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), with schedules varying seasonally.

Once guests arrive, the experience can be surprisingly easy. English is widely spoken, and accommodation ranges from resorts and boutique hotels to private villas, allowing couples to create different experiences for different groups of guests.

Then there is location. St. Martin can become a starting point for experiences beyond the wedding itself – from days on the water to nearby islands – turning a wedding invitation into an opportunity for guests to discover more of the Caribbean.

For Canadian couples, it is a destination that can feel both wonderfully different and remarkably easy to embrace: Caribbean in spirit, international in character and distinctly touched by French culture.

COME FOR THE WEDDING. REMEMBER THE JOURNEY.

Perhaps the best destination weddings are the ones where, years later, guests remember much more than the ceremony.

They remember the dinner where everyone first met. The beach they discovered the next morning. The music. The food. The boat ride. The sunset. The moment two families became one group of people laughing around the same table.

That is what a destination can add to a wedding. And on St. Martin, one small island can hold a surprisingly big love story. st-martin.org
