Killary Fjord

Connemara, County Galway

Wild beauty on Ireland’s west coast

Kudos to Ireland’s Killary Fjord, for being recognized in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list, which highlights 25 of the world’s most inspiring travel experiences for the year ahead! Killary Fjord was selected as one of Lonely Planet’s must-have experiences for travellers seeking meaningful, immersive and unforgettable journeys.

The globally renowned travel authority praised Killary Fjord for its breathtaking scenery, tranquil atmosphere and exceptional outdoor experiences. In its announcement, Lonely Planet described Killary Fjord as “a strong contender for the most breathtaking, achingly beautiful place in the country,” highlighting the dramatic 16km fjord that stretches inland through the heart of Connemara.

A landscape made for adventure

Nestled between Counties Galway and Mayo along the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s only fjord is framed by steep mountain slopes, changing colours with the seasons from vibrant greens in summer to rich auburn tones in autumn and winter. The picturesque village of Leenaun sits at its head, surrounded by some of the region’s most striking peaks, including Mweelrea, the Maamturks and the Devil’s Mother mountain range. The fjord is also an ideal base from which to explore some of Connemara’s best-known attractions, including Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park and the popular Diamond Hill walking trail, all within easy reach.

A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, visitors can cruise the fjord’s waters with Killary Fjord Boat Tours, passing mussel farms while learning about the area’s unique geography, history and wildlife. You might even spot dolphins along the way. At Killary Adventure Centre, you can experience the fjord from the water by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or enjoy coasteering, archery, gorge walking and high-ropes challenges in the surrounding Connemara landscape.

The Canadian connection

Killary Fjord is located on the west coast of Ireland, which will soon have direct flights from Canada. Starting in June 2027, Air Canada will operate a new route from Toronto to Shannon (about 2.5 hours away from the fjord).

Sandra Bailey Moffatt, Country Director of Canada for Tourism Ireland, shares, “This recognition for Killary Fjord comes at a perfect moment, with Air Canada’s newly announced non‑stop flight from Toronto to Shannon set to strengthen connectivity to Ireland’s west coast. This new route opens even more opportunities for Canadian travellers to experience Ireland’s rich culture and heritage. It’s an ideal starting point for the Wild Atlantic Way, the world’s longest defined coastal touring route, where famed attractions, hidden gems and stunning landscapes unfold at every turn. And for the foodies, Killary Fjord is a great spot to discover the Irish food story shaped by world‑class seafood, coastal traditions and generations of fishing traditions.”

Explore Connemara

The wider region is equally impressive. Take a tour of nearby Aasleagh Falls, the beaches of Glassilaun and Silver Strand, the colourful towns of Clifden and Roundstone, and the village of Letterfrack, gateway to Connemara National Park. The annual Connemara Mountain Walking Festival also showcases the area’s spectacular terrain through guided walking tours led by local experts. Foodies will love the famous Killary mussels, best enjoyed with a pint of Guinness, while local seafood producers, traditional music sessions and authentic Gaeltacht culture offer deeper insights into the area’s heritage and way of life.

Among Lonely Planet’s recommendations, the renowned Famine Walk is an evocative trail that follows the shores of the fjord through one of Connemara’s most dramatic landscapes. The route passes grazing sheep, remote mountain scenery and the haunting remains of a 19th-century village.

So many reasons to put the wild beauty of Killary Fjord and Connemara at the top of your 2027 vacation list. For more details, visit Ireland.com.
